Wan Rosalind Wong
L'isle joyeuse / Isle of Joy by Claude Debussy; Pianist Wan Wong (w/manuscript score)
This is a piano solo work, akin to the Fantasie of Schumann and Brahms. The work is just under 7 minutes, and is considered as one of Debussy's longest and hardest piano repertoire. The piece depicts the embodiment of a feeling-- joy, likened to a physical place--the isle. At times whole-tone, at times pentatonic, the harmonic material flits here and there with frenetic energy. The iconic ending of the very last note on the piano punctuates the dream-like sequence, marking the finality of the episode. I very much enjoy playing this piece, and it has been a staple in my repertoire. Please enjoy the synced manuscript, to better your experience of the recording. Thank you!
